Final Source Book Entry: Street Trends

Zoot Suit
This is an image of Jim Carey from The Mask. The canary yellow ensemble he is wearing screams zoot suit. The high waist, pleated pants, and tight cuffs are a great example.  The costume designer on set was Ha Nguyen.

Zoot Suit Fashions on the Todays Runway

This ensemble is from the Limi Feu Spring 2009. The high waist, long coat, and wide trousers take influences from the zoot suit.

This look is from the Armand Bais One Fall 2009 collection. Although this is not a traditional zoot suit, there are influences from that street trend. Again, the high waist, long coat, and tight cuffs are inspired by zoot suits, this look just has a more modern twist.

Beatnik

Although this picture is not from a movie, I am using it because I think it is a great representation of Beatnik fashion during the time of it's popularity. The tight, skinny, black pants, flats, and the lack shirt with white trim, are very characteristic of Beatnik Fashion. The only thing missing is the beret!

This look is Marc by Marc Jacobs. The wrinkled pants, striped shirt, and beret are great beatnik fashion trends.

Teddy Boys

This is a great example of Teddy Boys Fashion. The velvet collar was a staple of the Teddy Boy suit. The grey color was also very popular.

This look is from the Burberry Porsum, Fall 2009 collection. The velvet pants and bow tie are great examples of Teddy Boy fashions.

This look is from the Hugo by Hugo Boss Fall 2009 Collection. The skinny tie was hugely popular in Teddy Boy fashion.

HipHop

There are many trends that represent hiphop. This image is from the 2008 movie Notorious. The style of shirt Jamal Woodard is wearing was extremely popular among the hiphop crowd in the mid 90's. I'm not exactly sure who the designer is but one the the major brands producing these kinds of shirts was Coogi. The gold chains, hat, and sunglasses were all very popular during that time as well. The costume designer on set was Janicza Bravo

.

HipHop on Todays Runway

When looking for current trends in HipHop fashion, I couldn't find any on the rinways that I felt accurately captured what people in HipHop are wearing nowadays. So, I looked for trends among young men that I know to be very popular and used those.

Singer Chris Brown is pictured here at the 2008 MTV Awards. The blazer, tie, and jeans look is very popular among people in HipHop. Im not sure who the designers of his outfit are.

Another popular look in HipHop is the blazer, baseball cap, and t-shirt. I am not sure what designers have contributed to this outfit.

Punk

This picture is from the 2007 movie, Punk's Not Dead. The hair, bracelet, and leather jacket scream punk.

Both of these looks are from the Dsquared Fall 2008 collection and they have very obvious punk influences.

Mod

These pictures are from the movie The Bank job which takes place in the 60's. Actress Keely Hawes is wearing a jumper with a long sleeved shirt underneath. Her hair and her outfit, even her makeup in the movie, scream Mod. The costume designer on set was Odile Dicks- Mireaux.

Both of these looks are from the Missoni Pre-Fall 08 Collection.

Disco

This image is from the movie 54 about Studio 54 in NYC. Studio 54 was the place to be during the height of the disco era! The costume designer on set was Ellen Lutter.

Gucci Fall 2009

This look from the Eley Kishimoto Spring 2009 Collection screams disco. The patterned tights, shoes, shiny top and bottom are very heavily inspired by the disco era.

Hippie

This is a picture of Odette Yustman, Spencer Grammer, and Rumer Willis recreating the vibe at Woodstock for the April issue of Glamour magazine. The headbands, flowing materials, and straight hair are all indicative of the hippie style back then.

Undiscovered Street Trends

Sporty Princess

I have seen a number of women in the entertainment industry wearing frilly, uber feminine dresses with tennis shoes. I like to call it the sporty princess look because it mixes ultra-feminine dresses with comfortable, sporty tennis shoes.

Colorful Tennis Shoes

Another trend that I've noticed within the HipHop community is colorful tennis shoe. Often times, these shoes are being worn with dresses and skinny jeans.

The Wrestling Glove

I've also noticed a lot of people in the entertainment industry wearing gloves to complete their looks. These aren't gloves to keep their fingers warm though, the look has more to do with a rock star look than with battling the elements. Mostly, the fingers are cut out like wrestlers gloves.

**Check the tennis shoes on Teyana Taylor, the colorful shoe trend with gloves**

Military Jackets with a Band Leader Twist

Finally, I've noticed a lot of people wearing military/band leader style jackets

with their everyday looks. Now, this is something that has already been on the runway however, the trend has recently been picked up by the fashion elite in the hiphop & R&B community so I figured it was worth mentioning here.
